FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where do I find out about the session times and locations?

Please click on the menu above, called "session info", or click here: https://www.sporty.co.nz/pickleballcanterbury/session-info?em=1, and come along. We would love to see you!

Is becoming a Canterbury Pickleball Club member compulsory if I just want to play at the local pay-to-play sessions at Pioneer, Selwyn, Ashburton, or Rangiora?

No, there is no obligation to join the Club. These sessions are offered by the relevant local authorities, and whilst committee members may convene them, are not operated by the Club. These sessions are the backbone of our sport, and we see these providers as important strategic partners who provide entry into the sport.

If I am not a member, can I still try a Club managed session or join a tournament?

Yes, we encourage people to participate and try different things to see what suits them best. However, the registration fee may be greater than that payable by members, and some events, such as leagues, tournaments, and graded sessions may be for members only.

If I must still pay-to-play on top of being a Club member, what do I get for my money?

The Canterbury Pickleball Club is a new club, seeking to become established in the region. As we gain more members, we will gain greater resources and ability to organise things for our members.

Your membership fee currently covers the costs of operating the Club, including (but not limited to):

  • Paying for the Club’s operating costs such as online annual filings to maintain our incorporated society status, bank charges, accounting, and membership management software

  • Equipment such as nets, balls, and paddles for use at club-hired venues

  • Set-up costs for player development opportunities such as leagues and tournament play

  • Club events, some of which will be free

  • Maintaining the website, the mobile app and promotional material

  • Member benefits made available by partners and sponsors

In addition, arranging venues and equipment outside the existing public pay-to-play sessions in each participating region requires a contractual and financial commitment. As an incorporated non-profit sports club, we can apply for grants and funding to allow us to make such commitments for structured initiatives and to run these over an extended period to ensure certainty of play. Funds will also be used for player development activities such as coaching clinics.

The Club's Rules provide that where we receive funding for an initiative to be run in a particular region, that money can only be used for that purpose and that region. For example, if we received funding to run a tournament in Ashburton, that money will be held in a separate account and can only be used for that purpose.
